Sleep Consultant’s Famous Sayings: Breaking It Down

If you are reading this article, hello! Brooke here, Certified Pediatric Sleep Consultant.

WHAT THE FRICK DOES THAT MEAN? It means that I gather information from families, listen to their stories, empathize with their family needs and create a sleep plan that is specific to their child.

I am a firm believer that every child is different, but every child deserves the gift of sleep.

If you are new to what sleep training is or what it is sleep coaches do, guess what? It has been around for a long time, but every sleep coach puts their own twist on the tips and tricks that they help families implement.

SOME THINGS YOU MAY HEAR:

  • I can help your baby sleep 11-12 hours at night

  • I can help you find sleep in 2- weeks

  • A healthy sleeper is able to sleep work through regressions and sickness easier

Okay, so…. Imma break these down. Because if you are anti-sleep training these probably make you cringe, and they should without any back information.

Sleeping 11-12 Hours At Night:

If you lay your baby/toddler down and they sleep 11-12 hours at night… without waking or moving… THEY ARE A ROBOT.

But, Brooke… YOU SAID. HOLD UP! I said I can help your little one sleep 11-12 hours at night because they now have the independent sleeping skill to wake…. and fall back asleep.

There is no one on this earth who can shut their eyes and not arouse from sleep at any given point. It is not biologically normal to do so. But, everyone wakes through the night and it is the families that I work with, and other sleep consultants, who have little ones who are in their safe sleeping spaces for 11-12 hours waking and falling back asleep independently.

Sleep Magic in two weeks

Yes, that is right. I for sure have helped more than numerous families find 11-12 hours if restful nighttime sleep, in two weeks (some even sooner). But, there have also been families that I have worked with for up to 3- weeks. Did that mean their baby needed to scream or cry for 3- weeks? ABSOLUTELY NOT!

It meant that a nap or two were not as long as I liked so I wanted to mess with the schedule. It meant that an early morning wake creeped in, so, I wanted to see what was causing that wake. It meant that a new skill was learned and parents needed more guidance on figuring out how to practice this skill.

Sleep Trained For Life:

Once again, your child is not a robot. It is okay, for your child to have off nights. It is okay for your child to go through separation anxiety, it is okay for your child to become scared of the dark. YOUR CHILD IS HUMAN.

Creating a healthy and safe sleeper is not a 2- week job. It is consistency and boundaries.

My two girls, are proof of that. My oldest was sleep trained at 6-months. She cried for one day. ONE. Have we walked through protesting? YES. And what do I do? I always enter. I always talk her through it. I always hold the boundary that her bed, is her safe spot.

Does my youngest call out for me, from time to time? YOU BETHCA. I enter. I remind her that I am in the next room and that I can see her through the monitor. I check her closet for monsters and I spray the scaries away.

My sleep trained children are not robots. But, guess what? They are healthy independent sleepers, and it works for our family.
