Sleep Sacks Vs. Swaddles
The overwhelming registry list… it JUST keeps getting longer.
Swings, cribs, car seats, bottles, diapers, pacifiers, bibs, clothes, colic drops… the list continues.
All of these items above may seem familiar- yes, this may be your first, but you’ve seen all these items before, but now… you’re seeing the words, “Sleep Sack & Swaddles.”
What the heck is a sleep sack/ swaddle?????
Sleep Sack Vs Swaddle:
Sleep Sack: arms are free. Able to safely roll. Typical ages 4 months and up.
Swaddle: typically used newborn days. Helps with reflex’s. Under 12 weeks or until infant is able to roll.
Now you’re adding new items to your registry….
Then, you’re searching through google and you find, “Weighted Sleep Sacks-Unsafe.”
WHAAAAT!!!!!
Let me calm you by saying, these items are NOT needed.
Yes, I do encourage both when I educate families on sleep, but neither of these items are the end all be all.
Sleep can occur without ever purchasing either.
If you are going to purchase them, it is important that you know- Weighted Sleep Sacks have been deemed unsafe.
So, if you’re having a panic attack because your best friend swears that it (the weighted sleep sack) is the ONLY thing that got her little one to sleep, chill.
Sleep items are not what make a great sleeper.
Encouraging a safe, calm, dark, peaceful and age appropriate schedule and routine- is the key to a great sleeper.
What To Know:
Amazon sleep sacks are just as wonderful as Kyte baby.
Swaddles need to be dropped at the first sign of rolling (I encourage before 12 weeks).
Sleep Sacks should NOT cover child’s face (should fit more snug in the chest and loose around legs/feet).
Babies should have full leg movement when in swaddles.
Hip movement is needed in both.
Sleep Sacks are your child’s blanket. Helps with ensuring safe sleep.
Sleep Sacks help with keeping child in crib longer.
Thicker sleep sacks help with the issue of babies getting legs stuck in rails.
If it’s hot in child’s room- thin sleep sack.
If it’s cold- long sleeve and thicker sleep sack.
Remember, neither are needed. Both are just another way of encouraging a routine.
If sleep is non-existent the sleep sack is not what’s going to fix the issue. Routine and consistency will.
