Mimic The Room

Traveling for upcoming vacations, holidays or just a random trip…. SLEEP is still possible while traveling!

There can be a lot of anxiety around your child’s sleep when you are used to, yourself, and your child receiving a great amount of sleep each night, and your child is completely comfortable in their sleeping space.

Though this is a really good thing… we seem to forget that kids are humans and it is totally okay for the adjustment period when traveling and in a new sleeping location.

Though, there is an adjustment day or night… sleep is still possible.

The biggest advice that I can give to you… is for you to MIMIC your child’s sleeping area in this new location to resemble their space at home.

If they sleep in a cool, dark and sound machine room filled area and you try to lay them down for sleep in granmas living room with the dog barking… sleep is not going to be filled with a lot of rest.

Though the sleeping area is not going to be exact, you can still ensure that it is extremely close.

NEED SOME IDEAS?

  • BIG CLOSETS:

    • The amount of walk in closets my kids have slept in to ensure that they receive their best sleep, is comical.

    • These areas are great for ensuring the room is pitch black to promote the idea that darkness means sleep and brightness means daylight.

  • DUCT TAPE AND ALUMINUM FOIL:

    • Cheap, annoying, but covers the windows perfectly.

    • Great option when there is not a closet area for your child.

  • SLUMBERPOD: MY FAV!

    • This is a pricey option from the beginning, but is a tool you will consistently use throughout your child’s infancy - preschool aged life.

    • Easily assembled with directions and breaks down perfectly for traveling whether car, train or plane!

  • SOUND MACHINES AND LIGHTS

    • Ensuring that you keep the same sound they hear at home can help them get comfortable with sleeping.

    • Keeping the light system the same is a great way to ensure they are visually aware of what is expected of them.

  • FAN:

    • Keeping the room cool and air flowing allows for better sleep. Especially if using the slumberpod.

What if they are having a hard time falling asleep, even with the tools in place and room mimic’d?

Be okay with offering more support. Understand that NIGHT one is typically the hardest night for you and the kids. BE CONSISTENT.
