School Aged Sleep: Behavioral or Medical?

Many people hear the words, “sleep training” and they quickly assume it is referring to the ages of 4 months- 2 years. I think what I would love to share with families is that there is never a “cut off age” for seeking sleep support. I have worked with children ages 0-8 and know many Adult Sleep Coaches, who help adults find well-rested nights, too!

So, if you find yourself with a toddler, preschool aged child… or older and you would really love to find sleep… you have come to the right place.

There is not an age limit where parents need to look at their child and just assume that they will never sleep.

There are so many healthy sleep techniques and tips that older kids will benefit from. Here you will find those sleep tips and also, some RED flags you may need to ensure are taken care of, to ensure your child does not need medical attention.

How To Get Your Older Kid Sleeping:

  • Create a routine together.

    • Routines are key to sleep success.

      • Looks the same every night.

      • Filled with fun.

      • Filled with boundaries

      • Filled with love.

    • Ensuring that your older kid is aware of their nighttime routine and has visual cue of what the routine entails, is key to have a better start to sleep.

  • Limit Screens Before Bed

    • Screens are filled with blue light and blue light has the opposite affect of creating rest.

      • Limiting Screen 1.5-2 hours before bedtime is key.

      • Screens can cause nighttime terrors.

  • Structure in the Morning

    • When your child is aware of the routine for mornings, we begin limiting the guessing game of, “is it time to wake?”

    • Your child will have visual cues of when they can potty or leave their bed.

    • Having a morning routine that they look forward to in the morning can also, create more peaceful nights.
